With a design focused on water and energy efficiency, VaxThera has achieved LEED Gold certification, validated by GBCI, an important milestone that underscores its commitment to people’s wellbeing and environmental performance.

Medellín, March 2026. VaxThera, a Colombian biotechnology company based in Rionegro, announces that it has earned LEED® Gold certification for its VaxThera Zona Franca S.A.S facility, an achievement that reaffirms the company’s commitment to sustainability from the project’s earliest stages. The certification was awarded under the LEED BD+C: New Construction rating system, with a score of 70, and was officially validated in January 2026 by the Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), the organization responsible for administering and verifying LEED certifications worldwide.

 

This recognition confirms that VaxThera operates within an infrastructure designed under rigorous sustainability criteria aimed at reducing environmental impacts and promoting the wellbeing of employees and visitors. At the same time, it strengthens the company’s positioning in the sector and enhances its credibility with stakeholders by demonstrating sound, consistent environmental management aligned with the highest international standards.

 

The facility integrates tangible eco-efficiency measures reflected in day-to-day operations. Approximately 71% of the water used comes from the capture and reuse of rainwater, reducing reliance on conventional sources and strengthening the site’s water resilience. On the energy front, the commissioning of solar panels enables 20% to 30% of total consumption to come from photovoltaic generation, helping reduce the environmental footprint while optimizing operating costs.

 

These initiatives are complemented by high-quality indoor environmental conditions designed to support employee wellbeing, including adequate air renewal rates, specialized gas extraction systems in basements and storage areas, and lighting parameters engineered to ensure an optimal visual experience. Together, these design and operational decisions translate into measurable efficiencies and sustained cost reductions, supported by rainwater recirculation and on-site energy generation.
