VaxThera Achieves LEED® Gold Certification for Its Manufacturing Facility, Reinforcing Its Commitment to Sustainability
With a design focused on water and energy efficiency, VaxThera has achieved LEED Gold certification, validated by GBCI, marking a milestone that endorses its commitment to environmental performance and the well-being of people..
Medellín, February 2026 — VaxThera, a Colombian biotechnology company located in Rionegro, announces that it has obtained LEED® Gold certification for its manufacturing facility, VaxThera Zona Franca S.A.S., a milestone that reaffirms the company's commitment to sustainability from the project's inception. The certification was awarded under the LEED BD+C: New Construction rating system, with a score of 70 points, and was officially validated in January 2026 by Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), the organization responsible for administering and verifying LEED certifications worldwide.
This achievement confirms that VaxThera's operations are conducted in a facility designed according to sustainability criteria aimed at reducing environmental impacts and promoting the well-being of employees and visitors. At the same time, it strengthens the company's reputation within the industry and enhances its credibility among stakeholders by demonstrating a serious and consistent approach to environmental management.
The facility incorporates concrete eco-efficiency measures reflected in its day-to-day performance. Nearly 71% of the water consumed comes from harvested rainwater, reducing pressure on conventional water sources and contributing to the site's water resilience. In terms of energy, the commissioning of solar panels enables between 20% and 30% of total consumption to come from photovoltaic sources, reducing both the environmental footprint and operating costs.
These initiatives are complemented by indoor environmental quality conditions that support employee comfort, including adequate air renewal rates, gas extraction systems in basements and storage areas, and specific lighting parameters designed to provide an optimal visual experience. Collectively, these design and operational decisions translate into measurable efficiencies and sustained cost reductions through rainwater recirculation and on site energy generation.
“This recognition demonstrates that our infrastructure is aligned with the highest international standards and that environmental efficiency can and should generate well-being for people, employees, and value for the business,” said Juan Pablo Hernández, Vice President of VaxThera.
The LEED Gold certification is part of a long-term vision. As part of VaxThera's sustainability plan, the company is advancing a double materiality assessment process that will serve as the foundation for defining its strategy and establishing priorities, not only in environmental matters but also in social and governance issues. This process will be supported by goals and metrics that guide decision-making and create value for all stakeholders.
