VaxThera, GC Biopharma and RIGHT Foundation Advance Influenza Vaccine Technology Transfer in Colombia

The project brings together international funding, proven vaccine expertise and local capabilities to strengthen vaccine manufacturing in Colombia and Latin America.

VaxThera S.A.S., GC Biopharma and the Research Investment for Global Health Technology Foundation, known as RIGHT Foundation, announced a collaboration to advance the transfer of influenza vaccine manufacturing technology to Colombia. Supported by funding from RIGHT Foundation, the project seeks to establish local capabilities and contribute to a more resilient and equitable vaccine supply for Colombia, Latin America and the Caribbean.

VaxThera is the first organization in Latin America to directly receive funding from the RIGHT Foundation, marking the Foundation’s second technology transfer project. This recognition reflects the confidence that international organizations place in VaxThera’s ability to integrate research and development, qualified scientific talent and local production capabilities, turning global collaboration into tangible regional impact.

GC Biopharma, VaxThera’s Korean technology partner, will contribute its experience in influenza vaccines to define and execute the transfer pathway. The collaboration combines established technical expertise with VaxThera’s local infrastructure and knowledge of the Colombian and regional health environment, creating a strategic roadmap for the development of sustainable manufacturing capabilities.

“Being selected for this grant demonstrates the trust that global health organizations and international partners place in VaxThera, from our research and development capabilities to our ability to manufacture locally. This project turns our purpose into concrete action by bringing knowledge, technology and production closer to the people who need them,” said Jorge E. Osorio, CEO at VaxThera.

The influenza vaccine will be the first product to enter the technology transfer process in Colombia. The product has extensive experience of use in immunization programs in Colombia and Latin America and has been used continuously in the country for more than ten years. It is also prequalified by the World Health Organization, supporting confidence in its quality, safety and effectiveness.

GC Biopharma and its influenza vaccine were selected through a careful strategic assessment focused on quality, experience, regulatory readiness and alignment with public health needs. This approach is intended to provide Colombians with a trusted alternative while establishing the technical foundations required for local manufacturing.

The project will support the transfer of knowledge and manufacturing processes, specialized workforce training, qualification activities, and quality control testing, as well as the applicable regulatory submissions. These activities represent a concrete step toward building sustainable local capabilities and strengthening preparedness for future public health needs.

For Colombia, the collaboration goes beyond the introduction of a vaccine. It demonstrates that Colombian biotechnology companies can participate in complex international projects, attract global health investment and build trusted relationships with leading partners. It also strengthens the visibility of Colombia’s scientific and manufacturing potential worldwide.

“This project is a strong example of how Korea’s vaccine expertise can be combined with local expertise and capabilities to strengthen regional vaccine manufacturing,” said Minwon Lee, Executive Director of the RIGHT Foundation. “We will continue to foster partnerships that leverage Korea’s strengths to contribute to global health equity.”

The parties will now advance the technical and regulatory roadmap for the project. Further details, including implementation milestones, expected timelines, and future development opportunities, will be shared as key objectives are achieved.
